609. Effects

  • 609.1. A result is one thing that takes place inside online game as a consequence of an enchantment or ability. Whenever an enchantment, triggered ability, or triggered ability resolves, it might develop a number of one-shot or continuous effects. Static capabilities may create more than one continuous impacts. Text itself is never ever an impact.
  • 609.2. Impacts apply and then permanents unless the instruction’s text says usually or they obviously can apply and then things within one or even more other areas.
Sample: a result that modifications all lands into animals won’t change land cards in players’ graveyards. But an impact that claims spells cost even more to throw will apply and then means regarding the stack, since a spell is always regarding pile while a new player is casting it.
  • 609.3. If an impact attempts to take action impossible, it will only as much as possible.
Example: If a new player is holding one card, a result that checks out “Discard two cards” causes them to discard just that card. If a result moves cards from the collection (instead of drawing), it moves as many as possible.
  • 609.4. Some results state that a player may do something “as though” some problem had been true or a creature can do one thing “as though” some condition had been true. This is applicable and then the stated result. For purposes of this result, treat the game exactly as in the event that stated condition were real. For all various other purposes, treat the game ordinarily.
  • 609.4a If two results suggest that a person may (or a creature can) perform some same thing “as though” various conditions were true, both problems could use. If a person “as though” impact fulfills what's needed for the next “as though” effect, then both effects will apply.
Instance: a person controls Vedalken Orrery, an artifact that says “You may cast nonland cards like they had flash.” That player casts Shaman’s Trance, an instantaneous that states, simply, “You may play cards from other players’ graveyards as though they certainly were within graveyard.” The player may cast a sorcery with flashback from another player’s graveyard like it had been because player’s graveyard so when though it had flash.
  • 609.5. If a result you could end up a tie, the written text associated with the enchantment or capability that created the impact will specify how to proceed in the case of a tie. The Magic online game has no standard for connections.
  • 609.6. Some continuous impacts tend to be replacement effects or avoidance impacts. See principles 614 and 615.
  • 609.7. Some effects affect damage from a source—for example, “The next time a purple supply of your choice would deal harm to you this turn, prevent that damage.”
  • 609.7a If a result needs a player to decide on a source of damage, he or she may choose a permanent; an enchantment on the pile (including a permanent spell); any object described by an object in the pile, by a replacement or prevention impact that is waiting to apply, or by a delayed triggered ability that’s waiting to trigger (regardless of if that object is no much longer into the area it once was in); or, for certain casual variation games, a face-up card in the demand area. A source does not should be effective at dealing harm to be a legal choice. The origin is opted for when the result is made. If player decides a permanent, the consequence will apply to the next harm dealt by that permanent, no matter whether it’s fight harm or damage dealt because of a spell or capability. If the player decides a permanent spell, the end result will affect any harm dealt by that spell and any damage dealt by the permanent that enchantment becomes when it resolves.
  • 609.7b Some results from settled means and capabilities prevent or exchange harm from sources with certain properties, such an animal or a source of a certain color. As soon as the source would deal damage, the “shield” rechecks the source’s properties. If the properties not any longer match, the damage isn’t avoided or changed. If for almost any reason the guard prevents no harm or replaces no harm, the guard is not consumed.
  • 609.7c Some results from static capabilities avoid or replace damage from resources with particular properties. For those results, the avoidance or replacement relates to sources which are permanents with that residential property and also to any resources that aren’t from the battleground that have that residential property.
