What are the differences between combat damage, direct damage, and loss of life?

Damage dealt to a new player typically triggers that player to reduce that much life. See guideline 119.3.

This difference between damage and losing life is very important. These are typically deliberately kept individual for cards like Griselbrand. The designers wouldn't want you to avoid the loss of life brought on by their capability by casting a simple harm reduction spell, like Reflect Damage, therefore reduced life is kept as an independent concept.

If a triggered ability claims "whenever a player is dealt damage, " it could not trigger whenever that player is afflicted with a spell that causes loss of life.

In regards to the Blinding Angel instance, you're proper. Blinding Angel didn't deal fight damage so its capability will never trigger.
