Magic the Gathering token rules

110.5.Some effects put tokens onto the battlefield. A token is a marker always portray any permanent that'sn’t represented by a card.

110.5a A token is actually had and managed by the player under whose control it entered the battlefield.

110.5b The enchantment or capability that produces a token may establish the values of every quantity of traits for token. This becomes the token’s “text.” The characteristic values defined that way are functionally equal to the characteristic values which can be imprinted on a card; for example, they define the token’s copiable values. A token doesn’t have any attributes not defined by the spell or ability that developed it.

Sample: Jade Mage gets the capability “{2}{G}: place a 1/1 green Saproling animal token onto the battlefield.” The resulting token does not have any mana price, supertype, guidelines text, or abilities.

110.5c a spell or capability that produces a creature token sets both its name and its animal kind. In the event that enchantment or capability doesn’t specify the name of this creature token, its name's the same as its creature type(s). A “Goblin Scout creature token, ” for instance, is termed “Goblin Scout” and has the creature subtypes Goblin and Scout. As soon as a token is on the battleground, changing its title doesn’t change its creature kind, and vice versa.

110.5d If a spell or capability would develop a token, but an effect states that a permanent with one or more of the token’s faculties can’t go into the battlefield, the token is not created.

110.5e A token is at the mercy of anything that affects permanents generally speaking or that impacts the token’s card kind or subtype. A token is not a card (regardless of if represented by a card which has a Magic right back or that came from a Magic booster pack).

110.5f A token that’s eliminated, or that is in a zone other than the battlefield, ceases to occur. This really is a state-based activity; see rule 704. (observe that if a token modifications areas, relevant triggered capabilities will trigger before the token ceases to exist.)

110.5g A token which includes kept the battleground can’t move to another area or come back onto the battlefield. If such a token would transform zones, it remains with its current area rather. It stops to occur next time state-based actions tend to be examined; see rule 704.
